Steve Mathis, owner and farm manager of Mathis Farms, began farming strawberries during high school and bought his first 10-acre farm in 1985. Today, Mathis Farms has more than 200 acres of strawberries and blueberries.
Steve is committed to protecting water resources, and has installed a weather station and soil moisture monitoring system through the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and Southwest Florida Water Management District’s MiniFARMS program. He has been progressive in determining ways to grow berries, conserve water, limit disease and find new market opportunities.
In 2013, the Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce Agri-Business Committee named Steve Agriculturalist of the Year.
